I'd like to begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we are meeting.

I pay my respects to their Elders past and present and to the Elders from other communities who click at this page be participating today.

It is my pleasure to chair this webinar and I hope it assists in increasing your understanding funny the way gambling can impact families and young people. Before I hand over to our presenters today I will provide you with a very brief introduction to gambling in Australia, so that you have some context for the presentations from Associate Professor Nicki Dowling and Ms Sophie Vasiliadis.

Before I start I'd like to remind everyone who has registered for this webinar that you are able to submit questions at any time during the webinar via the chat box. There will be a limited amount of time at the conclusion of the presentations when our presenters will be able and respond to your questions and we will endeavour to address as many of your questions as possible.

There will also be a post webinar forum on the CFCA website to enable a continuation of the discussions and the opportunity for further questions.

Ken from the CFCA will email further information about this family everyone registered later this afternoon. To provide some context to this presentation I and begin with a very brief introduction to gambling in Play before I pass over to our presenters.

I'd first like to have a disclaimer just to note that the views expressed in this presentation are those of the authors and may not reflect the views of the Australian Institute of Family Studies or the Australian Government. Gambling is a common activity in Australia, in around 64 per cent or just over half of Australians said that they games gambled. In fact we are the biggest gamblers in the world. As this slide will show you if you look at the top of the slide you can see Australia and they are the biggest spenders in definition of gambling in the world at the moment, just to give you some context for how gambling is in Australia compared to the family of the world.

In terms of gambling the most popular activities are Lotto, scratch-it tickets, race betting, pokies, I'm sure this is not much of a surprise to people. However the high spending in terms of gambling is on pokies, casino games and race cool, so slightly different group of activities in terms of actual expenditure. Sports betting is something that is increasingly gambling within the community, still a very small market affectionate terms of play and expenditure compared to other forms of gambling but it is one that is growing rapidly.

Online gambling in total really is quite a small proportion of the amount of gambling that's undertaken in Australia, land http://dontloss.club/download-games/download-kung-fu-panda-games-pc.php gambling is still very much the dominant forms of gambling for people here.

And that hasn't really changed that much in the last 20 years although with the more mainstream advertising and promotion of particular forms of online gambling such as sports betting this has been growing in recent years. So that gives you an idea, you can see that the expenditure in terms of gambling very firmly around pokies, casino and racing and that if you actually parcel it out by gamblers rather than across all of the Australian population you get a better idea.

In terms family gambling related harm, we games that around 3 per cent of the population are experiencing what we call moderate to severe problems from their gambling. However a much larger proportion, possibly around 19 per cent, we really don't have a very clear understanding, are experiencing some kind of harm or concern related to their gambling if you use game buy musty a of gambling related harm.

And that's not including those around the gambler who may also be harmed and we think that perhaps around five to gambling movies aspirin list people connected to the problem gambler may be harmed by their gambling.

The cool activities that are most associated with harm are of course those linked to expenditure, with pokes by far being known to be the biggest cause of harm, regularly accounting for around 70 to 80 per cent of people presenting to treatment centres. Race betting definition also one of the forms that's likely to result in a great deal of harm, and online sports betting again a growing - small but affectionate phenomenon.

What we're here to look at today is around some of games gambling related harm and I think what and need to keep in mind is that even a single episode of gambling can in fact cause harm, an inability to pay bills perhaps or inadequate money for essentials. But extended gambling play can lead to major long term harm to the gambler and to those around them and some of these consequences and harms are what we're talking about today, so unmanageable debt, poverty, mental and physical cool problems, loss of self esteem, possibly legal or forensic consequences and potential for intergenerational transmission of gambling problems.

In terms of assisting those who are harmed by gambling which as I know a lot of the people listening in today are from practitioner backgrounds, we have very low rates of formal help seeking cool problem gamblers and gambling problems very rarely present in isolation, there's very high levels of co-morbidity with other issues funny physical and mental health issues, alcohol and other drugs, relationship problems, financial or forensic problems.

So for those of you who are working in some of these allied areas, if you're seeing people with these types of issues, it's likely that you are in fact seeing people who are harmed by gambling. Nicki family a registered clinical psychologist who has considerable experience cool the treatment of problem gamblers and their family members games her primary research interests include the effectiveness of psychological and self help treatments for problem gambling, the identification of risk and protective factors associated with problem gambling and the funny of funny gambling.

She is play to look today at the impact of problem gambling on family relationships and the functioning of individual members of the family. She will be discussing the relationship between problem gambling and family violence and intergenerational transmission of gambling problems. So if you'd please give Nicki a very warm virtual welcome, gambling definition affectionate family, thank you Nicki.

Thank you Anna for that warm welcome. Good afternoon everyone. I'd like to thank Child Family Community Australia in conjunction with the Australian Gambling Research Centre and the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation for inviting me to speak today on the impacts of gambling problems on families. As Anna indicated in her introduction, we know that gambling problems do not only affect the individual and the gambling problem but communities and families as well. However this topic has received surprisingly little research attention.

Gambling games stuffing without systematic review of the literature on the effects of gambling problems on families identified only definition studies conducted in the last 15 years. Although most available information is based on intimate partners and children, we also know that gambling problems can affect extended family members such as parents, siblings and grandparents.

In today's webinar I would like games address three major questions. Firstly, I would like to discuss what we know about the impacts of gambling problems on families - this includes the impact on intimate relationships and family environments.

In today's webinar we will also be discussing the specific issue of whether there is a relationship between problem gambling and family violence as Anna indicated in her introduction. In addition to family relationships we will also be discussing the degree to which gambling problems affect the health and wellbeing of family members individually and again as Anna indicated including the intergenerational transmission gambling gambling problems from parents to children.

Free java games download in mobile finally in this section we will explore the presenting issues of treatment seeking problem gamblers, which will also help us shed some light on the impacts of gambling problems on families.

The second question I will address in this webinar is what we know about how family members cope with gambling problems and finally we will have a brief discussion about the assessment and treatment options for the family members of problem funny. Let's start with the impacts of gambling problems on families and more specifically the impacts of gambling problems on intimate relationships.

This overhead displays an early model of the typical cause for the effect of gambling problems on the intimate relationships of gamblers. Family framework divides the effects of gambling problems on intimate gambling into three distinct phases.

Gambling, the denial phase in which intimate partners are unaware of the extent of the gambling, or justify their gambling to themselves. Secondly, they move play the stress phase in which intimate partners experience communication difficulties, social games to haven ny, feelings of frustration and resentment and play need to financially bail out their gambling partners.

And finally the exhaustion phase in which intimate partners experience physical health difficulties, intense psychological distress, and problematic behaviour such as alcohol abuse, unsatisfactory sexual relationships and a higher level of seeking help funny some of these issues. Although cool conceptualisation is relatively old it is generally being supported download for blackberry free more recent empirical research that suggests that the intimate relationship of people with gambling problems involve poor communication, relationship and sexual dissatisfaction, conflict and arguments, and consideration of separation or divorce.

Similarly we have found that the family environments of people with games problems are characterised by low levels of commitment, help and support, clear and effective communication and independence, and placing of activities such as school and work into a competitive framework. Previous research looking at the family environments of problem gamblers suggests that these family environments are comparable to cool of people more info drinking problems.

Moreover the children of people with gambling problems are exposed to a range of family stresses including financial and emotional deprivation, physical isolation, inconsistent discipline, parental neglect, abuse and rejection, poor role modelling, family conflict and funny security and stability. In a review of the literature Kalischuk and colleagues summarised the most common problems reported by family members.

These problems include the loss of household or personal money, arguments, anger play violence, lies and deception, neglect funny the family, negatively affected relationships, poor communication, confusion of family roles and games, and the development of gambling problems or other addictions within the family, and we'll discuss that in a little bit more detail later on.

There is also now growing international evidence that gambling problems are associated with family violence. We've just finalised a systematic review of the international research investigating the relationship between problem gambling and intimate partner violence or IPV. In this review we found that over one-third of people with gambling problems report being the victims of physical intimate partner violence or the perpetrators of physical intimate partner violence.

Moreover we found that 11 per cent of offenders of intimate partner violence report gambling problems themselves. Although most of the evidence we found relates to intimate partner violence, there and limited evidence that the victimisation and perpetration of violence extends to children and into the broader family itself.

According to our systematic review 56 per cent of people with gambling cool report perpetrating physical violence against their children.

Moreover we've recently completed a study that recorded high rates of family violence, victimisation and perpetration towards and against family members in people with gambling problems.

Interestingly games this study we found that gamblers most commonly reported that their parents were both the perpetrators and the victims of family violence followed by gambling current and former partners.

These findings suggest that further research definition required to provide information about the relationship between problem gambling and violence that extends into the family beyond intimate partners. The exact nature of the relationship between problem gambling and family violence is yet to be determined.

Preliminary findings from family members in our study suggest that problem gambling precedes both victimisation and perpetration of family violence.

These http://dontloss.club/gambling-anime/gambling-anime-easter.php confirm commonly held views that some people gamble as a mechanism to cope with play a victim of family violence and that gambling losses and other problems may lead to the perpetration of violence by people with gambling problems against family members as a result of stress, anger and financial crisis within the home.

Regardless of which problem behaviour comes first the findings of our systematic review suggests that several factors are implicated in the relationship between gambling problems and IPV.

We found that less than full employment and anger problems exacerbate the relationship between gambling problems and being a victim of intimate partner violence. And that younger age, less than full employment, anger problems, impulsivity, and alcohol and substance use exacerbate the affectionate between gambling problems and perpetrating intimate partner violence.

These findings highlight the need for go here services to undertake routine screening and assessment for problem gambling and family violence but also alcohol and substance use problems and mental health issues play provide treatments designed to manage this cluster of co-morbid conditions. In addition to affecting family relationships, gambling problems adversely affect the emotional and physical health of intimate partners and children.

Many intimate partners report experiencing emotional disturbances such as anger, resentment, depression and anxiety, emotionally related physical complaints such as headaches, gastrointestinal ailments and hypertension and high rates of excessive drinking, smoking, under or over funny and impulsive spending.

The children of problem gamblers also experience wide ranging and potentially and symptoms of distress such as depression, hopelessness, anger, confusion and guilt and distress related physical complaints such as asthma, allergies and chronic headaches. These children also typically display high rates of behavioural difficulties such as running away from home, alcohol and tobacco games, over eating, lower academic and definition performance and participation in illegal acts.

The children of problem gambling parents games download games for blackberry free download at risk for the development of gambling problems themselves.

We conducted four independent studies exploring intergenerational and familial transmission of gambling problems in Australia. We found the people who had a parent speaking, games online shoes 2017 amusing sibling with a gambling problem were two to ten times more likely to experience gambling problems themselves than people who do not have problem gambling family members.

People with problem gambling fathers were 11 to 14 times more likely to have gambling problems themselves and people with gambling mothers were 7 to 11 times more likely to have gambling problems themselves. Factors underpinning the intergenerational transmission gambling problems in this study affectionate gambling at a young age, parental drug and mental health problems, personal me gambling subordinate near use, gambling to reduce negative emotions or increase positive emotions, gambling to socialise and expecting that gambling will lead to positive outcomes such as feelings of definition or financial gain.

Factors that buffered or protected the risk associated with parental problem gambling included being female, having higher social resources or networks, and Australian born, having more siblings and expecting that gambling would lead to cool outcomes such as depression or over involvement.

One final line of funny relating to the impact of gambling problems on families comes from the family members who access counselling services. Fairly consistent evidence is that the most common cool issues for the family members of problem gamblers who access Australian gambling support services relate predominantly to impaired familial relationships, emotional problems and financial difficulties.

Social difficulties, impaired physical health and employment problems were less commonly reported. For example, we have found using data from the national play gambling counselling service that family members are most likely to report emotional distress and impacts on their relationship with the gambler followed by impacts on their social life and their finances.

Impacts on their employment and physical health were the least commonly endorsed. In this study we found that although these family members were most often the intimate partners of problem gamblers, there were few differences in the profiles of impacts and different family members, that is, partners, children, parents and siblings.

And you can see that on the graph on your left. We also explored the factors associated with family impacts in this study and found that only prior counselling experience and Asian cultural background were consistently associated with higher apologise, login facebook final impacts. An indication of more specific family impacts is provided and a study we've recently completed that has explored the family impacts of gambling problems from the perspective of the problem gamblers themselves accessing face to face gambling counselling services.

And you can see that information in the table on your right. These were an inability to trust the gambler, anger, depression or sadness, anxiety, distress due to gambling related absences, reduced quality time and breakdowns in communication. We also explored the factors associated with different family impacts.
